Open Graph
Open Graph is a set of meta tags that tell social platforms and messaging apps what title, description and image to show when someone shares your URL.
Four tags carry nearly all of it: og:title, og:description, og:image and og:url. Without them a platform guesses from the page, and the guess is usually the first image it finds and the first paragraph it can scrape.
The image is where most previews go wrong. Use an absolute URL, 1200×630 for a wide card, and keep it under a few hundred kilobytes — scrapers give up on slow ones. Any text on the image needs to be readable at thumbnail size, because that is how most people will see it.
Previews are cached hard, by every platform, independently. Fixing a tag does not fix a link someone already shared; you have to run the URL through that platform's debugger to force a refresh, and some never refresh for old shares.
Common question
- Do Open Graph tags help SEO?
- Not directly — Google does not use them for ranking. They affect whether a shared link gets clicked, which is a different kind of traffic.
