Click-through rate

Click-through rate is the share of people who clicked your result out of everyone who saw it — clicks divided by impressions.

It is only interpretable against position. A result at the top of page one might see a quarter of searchers click; the same rate at position eight would be extraordinary. So CTR on its own says nothing — CTR compared with what is normal for that position says a lot.

A low rate at a good position usually means the title and description are not answering the query, or the SERP is answering it without a click. If an AI Overview or a featured snippet already gives the answer, impressions stay high and clicks do not follow, and no amount of rewriting fixes that.

Where it is genuinely actionable is the gap: queries where you rank well, get plenty of impressions, and are clicked less than the position warrants. Those are title and description problems, and they are among the cheapest things in SEO to fix.

Common question

What is a good CTR?
There is no single figure. Compare against your own average for the same position — Search Console gives you both numbers per query.
